Rev. Evert Comer Jr. of Denmark has been tapped to serve as the grand marshal of the 2018 Denmark Christmas Parade.
The parade will get underway at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1.
Comer, who has been a practicing attorney for more than 30 years, is currently serving his third four-year term on Bamberg County Council. He also served as a member of the Bamberg School District 2 Board of Trustees for 14 years and was a Denmark City Council member for six years.
An alumnus of the former Voorhees High School, Comer graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, with a B.A. in English; from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Evanston, Illinois, with an M.S. in journalism; from the University of South Carolina School of Law, Columbia, with a J.D. degree and from the Carolina Theological Bible Institute in Bowman with a B.A. in ministry.
Comer currently serves as chairman of the Bamberg County Democratic Party, member of the South Carolina Bar, Denmark Lions Club and Bamberg County NAACP. The life member and exchequer of the Denmark Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. presently serves on the board of the Bamberg County Chamber of Commerce.
The former reporter with The Times and Democrat and other newspapers is a past administrator in public information and development and an adjunct professor at Denmark Technical College.
Comer is an honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran, a 33rd-degree Mason and past worshipful master of Elizabeth Wright Lodge No. 44, AASRM and Rufus Jones Lodge No. 615, FAAYM, both of Denmark.
He was formerly a Sunday School teacher, deacon and trustee at Rome Baptist Church, Denmark, before being licensed and ordained as a Baptist preacher and serving for five years as pastor of Springtown Baptist Church in Bamberg.
Comer is married to the former Ruth Brown of Johnsonville, and they have four children and eight grandchildren.
Lineup for the Denmark Christmas Parade will begin at 12 p.m. on Dec. 1 in front of the old B&B Building Supply, formerly known as the Shuman Owens Building Supply, on Carolina Highway.
