Tampere, a City in Finland, Attracts Startup Founders From India

Tampere has a favourable climate for innovations; it has the infrastructure and services, support of the city and a common vision, everything a growing startup needs. Startups can use the city’s testbeds for rapid prototyping. Tampere has built a unique way of creating new know-how, and the city, corporates, educational institutions and citizens are there to support the growth of their startups. In Tampere, getting to know people and engaging the community is easy. Low levels of hierarchy allow the aspirant to aim high.

Tampere’s International House invited 10 startup founders and tech talent with their families to experience the true Tampere lifestyle between September 12-16.

As part of a campaign called Experience Tampere, two startups from India came to Finland to explore the Startup.Tampere ecosystem and the opportunities awaiting them. Finnish cities are active stakeholders of Finland’s ‘Talent Boost’ ecosystem. They have a very relevant role in talent attraction. Turku and Tampere – two cities from Finland are vivid hubs offering excellent opportunities for international talents. India is Finland’s focus country in talent attraction initiatives.

During the spring of 2023, Turku and Tampere have both been getting ready for their international talent attraction campaigns with a focus on startups. In Tampere, the promotion campaign is called ‘Experience Tampere’ and in Turku, the project goes under the name ‘Startup Call Turku’. This is for founders interested in having a business in Turku. The programme lasts for three months.

One of the visiting startups called Interval – a one-to-one learning platform, serves thousands of students and teachers every day to focus on the development and advancement of students by providing individual care, attention, and personal mentoring on the students’ learning potential. The syllabus is designed according to the needs of each student.

The second Indian startup that visited Tampere is XR Central, an interactive tech studio focused on using the Metaverse to solve real-world problems. They develop contexts and streamline efficiency to make all industries ready to operate on Web 3.0. According to XR Central, they are experts in conceptualising, building and scaling AR/VR solutions.

For these Indian startup founders, the City of Tampere organised a programme, which displayed the Tampere ecosystem and all the local support that can help them thrive and take off in the city. During their stay, they visited co-working spaces, innovation centres, accelerators, and the Platform 6 Startup House, while getting the chance to connect with local startups, network with founders and investors, gain insights from industry experts, and create new possibilities for their startups.

All participants got to experience Finnish culture along with their families and discover the unique charm of Tampere, enjoy cultural activities, indulge in traditional Finnish cuisine, and build connections beyond business.

The Experience Tampere campaign is organised by International House Tampere and funded by the Finnish national Talent Boost programme. Talent Boost is a programme to attract international talent and promote their immigration to and integration in Finland. The aim is to increase awareness of Finland and make Finland attractive to international talent and, at the same time, improve the employment of international specialists who are already in Finland.
